My family is ending out trip to Europe in Florence and didn't realize the first train in the morning to Fiumicino to catch our noon flight back to NY puts us a bit close for comfort time-wise (exactly two hours before the flight leaves, the train arrives at Fiumicino terminal.) Given strikes and slowdowns on top of that, I'm nervous about missing our flights, which connects through Dublin on AerLingus. Does anyone have a recommendation for a limo service or a car hire service that is reliable and reputable? We can't take the train the night before, as we have an event in Florence that evening that is the whole reason we scheduled the trip this way. Grazie for any tips on this!
Yes it is International because it goes to another country. It is Domestic because it is within Europe.
This is a pretty specialized request. You might be best asking your hotel.
First, the good news. Your flight in Rome is a domestic and not an international flight so it will be easier to get through the airport and two hours should be adequate but tight. In all of our travels in Italy over a number of years and four weeks of travel we have never hit a slow down or strike. While it is a commonly discussed items, in general, those problems are infrequently. Of course, if the one in a hundred hits your day it is a problem. A limo service will be very expensive. You might check if a bus would leave earlier. Another option is to see what it would cost to push you flight back a day. Might be cheaper than a limo.
Thank you. I'm not sure I understand, though. Rome to NY via Dublin is a domestic flight? Not international?
Just to be clear - If it is an international flight directly from Rome to the US you would use Terminal 5 to depart to the US since it is an international flight. Terminal 5 is a pain to use and requires at least an extra hour. The flight to Dublin is a domestic flight and most likely uses Terminal 3 which is closer to the train terminal and easier to use. You just walk from the train but would have to be bussed to Terminal 5. From Dublin to New York it is an international flight. In Rome do not make the mistake of going to the international terminal.
Andrea, Hiring a Limo service from Florence to Rome / FCO is likely going to be horrendously expensive. If you have an extremely large travel budget, that might be an option. I believe the first train departs Firenze SMN at 05:50, arriving Roma Aeroporto / FCO at 09:23 (time 3H:33M, one change at Roma Termini, current 2nd class fare listed at €44, reservations compulsory for the first leg). As the others have mentioned, your flight will likely be considered a "regional" flight, as your destination is within the E.U. Are you changing planes in Dublin? With an arrival at FCO at 09:23, you should be within the allowance for check-in times. Does your flight depart FCO at 12:10? It appears that Aer Lingus departs from T3, which is relatively easy to get to. Good luck and happy travels!
Thank you all for this insight and info. I did do a little research into the limo hire and discovered indeed how frightfully expensive. Also discovered that the train times for our travel dates will not be posted until May. Fingers crossed, the times won't change much from what they are now, and we will make our flight without incident!
Ron is a genius! If you rent the car the day before you can leave as early as you want on your travel day in order to not miss your flight.
Andrea, you could always just rent a car from the Florence airport (the night before if necessary - depending on the time you finish your appointment) and drive to Rome any time you want. If you're in a location not surrounded by ZTL's, you could rent closer to downtown. It's a little more than three hours from airport to airport... so an early morning drive would work, or you could drive at night and stay at many accommodations on the outskirts of Rome - then drive to the airport and drop off the car in the AM, hours before your flight. That would be far cheaper than a private driver/limo. And perhaps fits your schedule better than the trains. It's all highway from airport to airport. If you go that route, here are some hotels in Rome that have free parking. The map in this post could help you find one close to (and easily accessible to) the highway. Or if it works better for you, here are some recommended hotels by the FCO airport. You'll need an International Driving Permit if you plan on driving in Italy. Good Luck!
I was going to give you a link to a fantastic website - for Ron in Rome! BTW, he had a great suggestion. I'm going to send you to one of his many fabulous (and often-u-p-d-a-t-e-d) pages...The Hell That Is FCO! RonInRome (flashbacks, FLASHBACKS!!!!) Many places, I might arrive at the airport 2 hours before my flight, but nowhere I've been to in Europe (yet), and CERTAINLY not FCO! We stood in line f-o-r-e-v-e-r- very early in the morning this past Oct for our flight. (taking swig from bottle of booze) Awful. I would drive the night before my flight. You've got to drive in the dark anyway, so for me earlier would be better than possibly sweating it out just a few hours before my flight. And avoid those ZTLs!!! Good luck!
