I,m planning to go from Florence to Assisi in train and from Assisi to Rome in train as well,my question is: should I take the train from M. Novella to Torontola and take a bus to assisi? or there is train that goes direct to Assisi. And from Assisi to Torontola and transfer to a train that goes to Rome? Any advised will be appreciated, thank you in advance
Jaime, years ago, the train runs went from Florence to Assisi with no changes. Today, there are still such runs but mixed in now are runs that require 1-2 train changes along the way. Terontola-Cortona is one of the train change locations on some of the runs. If you plan carefully, you can still get the direct Florence to Assisi runs with no train changes. You can see these runs on www.trenitalia.com If you want to see the runs, just look out to a date within 7 days of when you are looking. For example, today is Mar 1. I looked at Mar 6. This way you can see the fares as well. After 7 days out, the fares disappear for Regionale trains (locals) which is what you will be on to Assisi. Journey time is just under 3 hours. One-way fare is 14.45Euro. Once at the Assisi train station, you will need to take a local bus or taxi up the hill to your hotel. The lady in the small shop adjoining the train station will sell you tickets for the bus. Actually, the train station is in Santa Maria degli Angeli which borders Assisi. From Assisi to Rome, you will change trains at least once - most likely at Foligno. From Foligno, you can either take the high-speed train to Rome (22Euro) or you can take another Regionale train (9.90Euro). The high-speed will get you to Rome from Assisi in 1hr55min. The Regionale will take 3.0hrs.
Jaime, looking at the Deutsche Bahn website, both segments can be done without train changes if you pick the right departure times. In late March, about 1/4 of the Assisi-Rome/Tiburtina trains are direct, as are maybe 15% of the Florence-Assisi trains. Given that you save anywhere from 1+ to several hours by taking direct trains, I think it's generally worth adapting one's schedule.
Thank you Larry for all those details, they really help me to plan my trip and hopefull will help others I will print it and follow as my guide. thank you Sherry as well for helping this adventurer in need.
