What's the best way to get from Florence to Amalfi? Four of us will be traveling. We don't necessarily have to take the train if a private driver would be better. Of course, splitting the travel between train to Rome and driver to Amalfi would be acceptable as well. Your thoughts and possible cost?
Larry, A private driver has to factor in his time as well as the miles. It's about 200 miles from your town to Chicago- which is "better", a private driver or the train/bus? Which will be cheaper? The train/bus. It's about 300 miles from Florence to the Amalfi area- same idea. The train will be less costly by far. Have a great trip!
The standard 2nd class fare for Florence-Naples is €72.00 on high-speed EuroStar Italia trains and €44.00 on InterCity trains. Booked several months in advance at trenitalia.com, you can get a Mini fare as low as €50.00 on ES trains and €18.00 on IC trains. The anytime fare for the Circumvesuviana commuter train that runs from Naples to Sorrento is €4.00.
I am researching a Rome/Positano transfer and a private driver for that trip is around $350 euro, so from Florence it would be even more expensive. If you don't use a private driver, you can train from Florence to Salerno and then ferry, bus or driver from Salerno to Amalfi. Amalfi is much closer to Salerno than Naples.
