From Fiumicino airport to sorrento

I will arrive Rome in the morning and will go to sorrento to meet my friends. What will be the best way to travel from the airport to sorrento? Should I take the Leonardo Express train from airport to Termini train station and then take the train to Naples? I was told that there is a direct bus from Rome to Sorrento. Is the bus station at Tiburtina? Is there train or shuttle from airport to Tiburtina station??

I saved this post into my Evernote a couple days ago. It is from this Board, but I have no idea where. You can easily find this by searching this Board's archives, as explained in the Webmaster's sticky "7/16/11 11:26 PM sally
san Francisco Dan, We just came back 2 weeks ago. This is just my opinion and might differ from others. From Rome , We took Curreri Bus to Sorrento. We chose it over the train so we don't have to lug our luggages as We need to change train in Naples. You can't prebook with Curreri. We got our ticket at the Tiburtina station. I think it was 18 euro one way. It was a comfortable ride. We stayed in Sorrento based on the advices here . Sorrento is a perfect home base. Transportation to Pompeii, Positano, Capri and Amalfi is so convenient. If you go to Capri, do consider taking the bus to Anacapri then the chairlift. It was fun."

Wayne, I haven't checked recently, but as I recall the Bus service from Tiburtina to Sorrento is limited to one or two runs a day. Depending on which time your flight arrives, you may or may not be able to connect with that. As you noted, the other option is to take the Leonardo Express from FCO to Termini, EuroStar Italia / Alta Velocita from Rome to Naples and then Circumvesuviana to Sorrento. Note that the Circumvesuviana has several routes, so be sure to board the correct one! Sorrento is the last stop on that route. Happy travels!

fyi the Circumvesuviana is a light rail commuter train, like BART, although not as plush. Yes, the Circumvesuviana makes BART feel plush. At Napoli Centrale, when you get off the real train, the Circumvesuviana station is downstairs, easy to find. It stops 30 times and takes an hour to Sorrento which is the end of that particular line. As correctly noted above make sure that you get on the train marked Sorrento; same as BART for Fremont, Richmond or other end of the line destinations When you board the Sorrento line you will not need to transfer. Just sit back and enjoy the Naples housing project graffiti. There is no place to put your luggage on the CV. I would never put it near the door and sit far away. Keep it with you, or stand up near it.

There was a post with a similar question a month or so ago. I remember the woman mentioning that her bus to Sorrento departed Tiburtina sometime in the mid-afternoon (maybe 2pm or 3pm). I went from Rome airport to Sorrento by train this past May (Leonardo Express, fast train to Naples and Circumvesuviana), and was in Sorrento by early afternoon. If you decide to go by bus, there's a local train from the airport to Tiburtina (8 euro, about 30 minutes). Local trains use the outside tracks at the airport train station while the Leonardo Express uses the center tracks. If I recall correctly, the bus station is across the street from the train station.

We are arriving in Rome at 8am and the bus is in the afternoon. We are renting a car and driving to Sorrento ( not through Naples) around Naples. We think this is the best way for us.
