from Firenze to Montepulciano : best public transport

hi all,

I am planning a trip with no car and thinking roma-firenze-montepulciano (and day trip to pienza) - and back to roma.

i want to see the Tuscan landscapes, and without a car picked Montepulciano as it seems an accessible town with good views. and of course i want the wine. (montalcino seems more difficult by public transport).

is montepulciano, pienza a good choice?

and what is the best way to go from firenze to montepulciano? google map shows some options; scenery on the way would be a great plus.

thank you

You can also rent a car if you stay a few days. You'll get a chance to roam around the area unencumbered by bus schedules, since buses are not that frequent.
You can rent in Florence, return in Rome. Or also pick up in Chiusi, where Avis, Europcar and Hertz have offices.

I've been in Montepulciano both with and without a car. With a car, I was able to easily day trip to both Pienza and Montalcino. Without a car, you'll only want to go as far as Pienza as the bus connection on to Montalcino is tricky. Another option you might consider is a customized day trip. When I stayed at Mueble il Riccio a few years ago, 2 women staying there had arranged a half-day trip driven by the owner or his son and said they really enjoyed it. I believe such trips need to be arranged in advance, so e-mail the hotel for more information if you're interested.
