From FCO to the cruise ship

We are staying in Rome after the cruise and my question is, After we arrive at FCO, Can we get to the cruise ship via the train? Or is a hired car better?

My wife and I did a Royal Caribbean cruise last June and we went from FCO to Civitavecchia to board our ship. There are two good options, either transportation offered by the cruise line or a private car. We opted for the cruise line transportation but if I were to do it again I would choose a private car. The reason for this is you don't have to wait for a bus full of passengers before you head for the ship which can delay you a couple of hours. The car and driver will meet you upon arrival at FCO and take you directly to the pier. Timewise you can be on the ship enjoying yourself way before the bus arrives. The price for either is about the same. You can go online to find a driver. Good luck and enjoy your cruise.

We did this last year and used a car service recommended by Rick Steves for Sorrento. www.benvenutolimos.com. We used them for transfers to the airport to the city center, as well as from the city to the cruise terminal and back. Their website gives you transfer and tour options and we ended up using them for our shore excursion tours in Naples, Livorno, and Sicily. From what we heard from others on the ship that used the cruise ship excursions, it was the right choice. (We had about 10 people in our group and so we got pvt tours at half the cost of the ship's) We actually added on a tour of Tivoli Gardens to our return trip from the cruise terminal to the hotel. It worked out great.

We used a private car to the port. We shared the ride with another family and split the cost. Have you tried www.cruisecritic.com you might find other people to split the cost.

Yes, you can get to Civitavecchia by train. Take the Leonardo Express from FCO to Termini. Trains run every 30 minutes.
There is frequent train service from there to the port. See the timetables at www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html. To do a dummy booking, enter a date less than 60 days from today.
