Our cruise ship docks in Civitavecchia which I understand is about an hour to hour and half to Rome. Our ship offers a transfer for $95 by bus and I wonder if there is a better way to get there? Train? taxi? We will be staying additional days near the Pantheon.
We arrived in April from a transatlantic crossing and faced the same dilemma about the best way for us to get to our hotel in Rome. I had been rather seasick for the last couple of days so was a bit unsteady on my feet. Walking to the train station was something I couldn't contemplate. HAL offered a transfer for about USD95 to a central spot in Rome with a couple of hours of sightseeing before the drop-off and the guide worked very hard to see we all got into taxis to get to our various hotels. In our case it was the best way, though admittedly expensive. But what the hay ... it's only money.
A private transfer (taxi) will cost you approximately 130 euro ($175 per car) one way. If your cruise charges $95 per person one way, then it's probably cheaper to take your own private taxi if it's 2 of you or more. By train it's the cheapest option. A Regional train will get you to Rome in approximately the same time as the taxi for 5 euro per person. The train station is 1 km (o.6 miles) from the port entrance, so basically a 15-20 min walk. With the train however you need to handle your own luggage on and off the train.
I really appreciate the replies. I wonder if tons of people will be trying to get a taxi and make it hard to get one when we get off the ship?
Yes, tons of people will want taxis but, guess what! More and more taxis keep appearing. It's a miracle!
"More and more taxis keep appearing. It's a miracle!" No. It's the Euros. They charge you 130 euro to cover a distance that will cost them no more than 8 euros in gasoline and 4 euro in tolls. Pretty good profit if you ask me.
Go onto the Cruise Critic board for your cruise to see if others want to share a ride into Rome. The highest rated private car service is romecabs.com which we've used on our own and with others we met through Cruise Critic. It is absolutely reliable. If luggage is an issue, bearing in mind there are no porters in Italian train stations, I recommend romecabs.com
We have made that run six and will do so again this Fall. In our opinion the only way to go is via train. Cheap, convenient, and fast. Between 45 mins and 1 hr 15 and 5 to 12 E depending on the train. The cruise ship will shuttle you to the port entrance and from there a 15 min walk along the beach to the train station. See roninrome.com for detail directions.
