Hi. My husband and I are traveling to Italy from Paris in mid July and would like to start at CT and work our way down through Florence, Sorrento, and end in Rome and fly home from Rome. We have 11 days to work with and would like to see and do as much as possible along the west coast of Italy. What is the best mode of transportation? and what are your recommendations for an itinerary?
The best mode of transportation is by train. You might want to consider fly in to Pisa (PSA) and fly back from Rome. How about: Day 1: CT Day 2: CT Day 3: CT Day 4: Florence Day 5: Florence Day 6: Sorrento Day 7 :Sorrento/Amalfi Coast Day 8: Sorrento/Capri Island Day 9 : Rome Day 10: Rome Day 11: Rome
Have a good trip!
Simone, The Itinerary provided in the previous reply should work well, but keep in mind that your time in each location will be reduced by the travel times. For example, from Florence to Sorrento you'll need to allow about three hours from Florence to Napoli Centrale, and then likely another couple of hours from Napoli to Sorrento via Circumvesuviana (which includes waiting times, etc). Overall, that trip will require at least half a day. Happy travels!
have done most of this trip on several trips. I only take the train and there was no trouble going from CT to Florence (you could stop in Lucca, a wonderful walled city) from Florence there are trains to Naples where you change to a local train (in the same station) and in an hr you are in Sorrento. lived there for 3 months and the train is used like a bus to the small towns between naples and sorrento.
you can walk from the train to the center of town in minutes and the view of the sea is wonderful. OR you can take the fast ferry from naples to sorrento and see everything from the sea!
Thanks for your informative responses. Sounds like a great itinerary. I was having trouble with it because we want to day trips to lucca, Siena, and a wine vineyard from Florence and go to Pompeii from sorrento. I appreciate your feedback.
