Friuli Venezia Giulia

Hello everyone. My husband and I are planning our next Europe trip for this coming October. For two of our weeks, we will be spending time in an apartment between Trieste and Udine, and plan to explore the Friuli Venezia Giulia region. I know 2 weeks is a long time in one area of Italy, but we like to take our time, explore the nooks and cranys, and "live" in an area. I've been doing a lot of research on what FVG has to offer and we're quite excited about our holiday. Has anyone spent any time in this area? What did you like the most? What surprised you? Where did you go?

George - thank you very much ! I have the FVG website, but not the other information. I'll have fun reading all your attachments.

Thanks George - Venice is also only approx 1.5 hrs away by train, so that's on our "possibilities" list. I've been reading the foodie links you sent.... my mouth is watering already !

One of the reasons we want to travel here is the diversity of history and culture this area has to offer: Hapsburg, Austio-Hungarian, Venetian. We'll be in Vienna/Salzburg for several days prior to arriving here, so we thought we would carry over the Hapsburg theme into Italy.

In addition to visiting Udine and Trieste, some of the other things on our possibility list are: the large cave near Trieste, the Isonzo valley that stretches into Slovenia and the WW1 sites and monuments throughout that area, the UNESCO sites in Cividale del Friuli and Aquilea, exploring the walled city of Palmonova, the Adriatic coast, doing some hikes/walks in the mountains.... oh, yes -- and enjoying the many different wine, beverages and food that this area has to offer. I'll write a trip report when we return so others can enjoy our adventures.
