I have found some free translation apps but even though it says free as soon as you want to use "voice "translation it requires payment. Does anyone know of an app for an IPhone that can be downloaded for free.

Google Translate is definitely your best option and it's very fast. You can type in English or speak in English or take a photo of Italian words - whichever, you get an immediate translation. Just be aware that the translations are not always correct, especially grammatically. Also the Italian language, like English, is packed with idiomatic expressions and quite often Google doesn't get the nuances of these.

Here's another vote for the big boy in the business, and totally free to use and install, and works offline too - Google Translate.

You don't even have to photograph signs and menus - the camera view gives you real-time translation.
