I'm going to make a trip for 3 weeks around Italy starting in the beginning of October. I studied some Spanish and had fun using it when I was travelling in Mexico and South America. I want to learn a few phrases to impress people and try to have basic, friendly conversations with locals. Can anyone recommend any good free resources online?
I think the BBC has on-line language courses.
I have used the apps Duolingo and Babbel on my phone and iPad
HIGHLY recommend DuoLingo. Free and it has so many languages! (even Irish!). You can mute the sound if you're in a place not conducive to noise!

I'm enjoying Duolingo for Hungarian.
check with your local library.
Another vote for the Duolingo app. Free, easy to use, worked well for me learning French from scratch.
Question on Duolingo for those who have used it. I'm trying on my computer, but I can't see how to 'hear' how things are pronounced on the Tips and Notes, and if I don't hear the words, don't know how to pronounce them. Not great with technology so I'm sure I'm missing some simple thing. Haven't been able to click on any of the words. Thanks!
We got Mango Languages free through our library.
MANGO LANGUAGES yes one f the features I like best is the ability to record phrases and listen to myself also can compare my pronunciation with the teacher.
available at my library
