Because my plantar fasciitis has flared up, we used the “Free Now”app in Rome to use taxis today. Works just like Uber! Stand on a street where a taxi can get to you, hopefully on the side pointed in the right direction, type in your destination, clicker order taxi, and within seconds, the name of the driver, type of car, and license plate pops up on phone. We used 3 times today. While you can set up to use credit card, you can skip that part and pay in cash. For the one taxi with our large dog, we ordered an XL, and called driver and asked “grande cane OK? and answer was “sì”.
However you do need cellular connection. Each taxi took only two minutes. On the way back to apartment from Victor Emmanuel II monument there was a taxi stand. Seemed the Taxi stand meter might have started at €3 instead of €4.40, but I liked that there would be no “lost in translation” with the destination on the app. And you can follow the route the taxi is going, which keeps driver “honest”
Not sure if this app is only for Rome or other cities in Europe or Italy.
