Free museums for disabled

I have been told that many museums and churches are free if you are handicapped. I was wondering what type of handicap ID is needed. In NJ the only ID the state provides is for parking. Is that okay?

How do we find out which museums and churches are free? We will be in Venice where we want to go to the Basilica San Marco, Doge Palace, Correr Museum, glass museum on Murano, lace museum on Burano, church on Torcello, Accademia, and Frari Church. In Milan we plan to go to the Duomo (and elevator to view), sforza castle, Leonardo da Vinci museum, basilica Di San Ambroglio and possibly Pinacoteca ambrosiana. We’ll be in Italy at the end of March. Thank you.

We were in Venice about 10 months ago. We presented our Maryland-issued handicapped parking placard and were able to gain free access to most places we visited.

Thank you. Not sure whether to take a chance and bring our handicap placards or pay for the senior museum pass (22 euros) which covers the Venice museums we want to see. Are the vaporettos manageable for people who use canes?

Do you have a copy of your state disability card. That is all I’ve ever needed. Do you use a wheelchair?

The vaporettos are very easy to manage with a cane. The attendants will help you on and off if needed. We loved the vaporettos!

Take your State disability ID, if you have one. A parking placard that doesn’t bear your name may not be sufficient, unless maybe your disability is visible and obvious. Vaporetto are accessible to people with disability, even with wheelchairs, at least some lines. Just be careful when you get on board as a vaporetto is a boat after all, therefore subject to wave motion, which is light on the Grand Canal, but can be choppier in the San Marco Basin (the large body of water in front of Piazza San Marco). There are seats for people with limited mobility so you won’t need to stand up during the ride.
