Free evening in Venice

We are leaving this Thursday for Rick's "Venice, Florence, Rome Tour" and am wondering if we should book the Classic Venice Bars Tour with Alex Schezzini ( mentioned in Rick's book) for our one free evening.

We just took a vaporetto around the Grand Canal after a nice dinner ... quiet and romantic. But you have to be with someone special. And be too old to want to visit bars

We went on the Bar tour with Alessandro and had a blast. He's like an old friend, or if you are young a favorite uncle.

If you don't or can't book the tour, I'd bet that some other tour members will be willing to brave the do-it-yourself version along with you. Harry's Bar is a fun, upscale stop, if you are prepared to pay 15 euros for a drink.

If I only had 1 free evening in Venice I sure wouldn't be spending it in a bar. Venice is too great a place to be bar-hopping. Just go for a walk down alleys where you've never been. Walk down to St Elena along the Grand Canal. Sit by the see wall and eat a take away pizza from the little bar/pizzeria in St Elena. There's so much to see in Venice.

I did the tour with Alessandro and loved it. You'll have plenty of time to wander around after his tour too.

we took the bar tour with alessandro do not call him Alex and we loved it. He also offers a back streets tour with you can go on before the bar tour. he will take you to some of the back streets and alleys and give you some great information about the buildings and some of the history. We are going back in July and I are going on the bar tour again.

That would be the time for your gondola ride.

I love just hopping on a vaparetto and riding up and down the Grand Canal peering into the lovely old palazzos, all lit up in the evening, being a shameless voyeur.

Michael, I will be in Venus next month and look forward to getting similar photographs to the ones you took.

I was really surprised the difference that a halfway decent camera made for me to be able to get those lowlight shots in Venice. I like to think they capture a little of the magic of that place.
