Free Days at the galleria dell'Accademia

We are on a Viking cruise and reach Pisa/Florence for Nov. 4 and 5. The 4th is a Monday, so our touring will be swerving to allow for Monday closures :) The Galleria dell'Accademia (one of our only must do's on the trip is David) is open the 5th, so we intend to go. However, this looks to be a free day and from Rick's post about the David and the Galleria, could be very busy. Has anyone gone on a free day? Can we still reserve entrance times (there are none on the ticket sites we've seen), or is it a bit of a free for all, and we just line up and hope for the best?
Thanks for any advice in advance.
Apologies if this is covered, my search wasn't returning anything relevant...

November 5 is a free day. The Accademia will be crowded and lines to get in will be long. I've had good luck there with much shorter free day lines in the late afternoon and especially if it's raining. That Tuesday will be the beginning of a free week at the Accademia, but not sure whether that means reservations are possible. Hopefully someone will know for sure.

As far as I know, reservations are not possible on free days. This is true at pretty much all of Italy's National Museums.

We SAW the line one October on a free day --- it was several blocks long before 8am. So get there much earlier.
