Just a "learn from my mistakes " moment, in Venice at our sit down dinner overlooking a canal, I chose the "catch of the day" because the price was right. I asked no questions about it. I was expecting some non descript white fish. What actually arrived was mostly things I don't like, mussels, a calamari, etc. Again, my bad for making assumptions and not asking questions. One of my travel companions ended up trading me her plate of pasta. sigh

We had a great meal at Ristorante Carpaccio Venezia in Venice. We also took posecco tour while in Venice. We took the train to the Prosecco region; the train ride was about 40 minutes. To get more information on the tour, email [email protected]

Thanks you for the replies. Regarding the Prosecco tour, did you do that through ‘get your guide’? How long was the tour

For dinner, Ai Mercanti is excellent. Very creative Italian cuisine.

You might like to visit the rooftop viewpoint at Fondaco dei Tedeschi, near the Rialto Bridge.

The visit is free, but you must have a reservation. They are released 3 weeks in advance (actually 3 weeks plus 1 day because of the time difference) and they sell out quickly, especially the late afternoon slots. Today (Aug. 23 in the US) they released Sept. 14, probably about an hour ago (around 5 pm PDT) and the latest slots are gone, but there are others open earlier in the day. The building itself is nice to see and explore—-they turned what used to be an ugly building into a very upscale department store.

Many canal side places lack quality, but don't lack for prices. There is an exception. It is Trattoria Da Giorgia ai Greci. It is very close to San Marco, but well away from the crowds, and has really good food.

Trattoria Da Marco Valla Fava on Calle Stagneri in the Rialto Bridge area. It is a bit on the pricey side, so you might want to do lunch rather than dinner. Some of the best sea food ever!! Try to eat inside rather than outside. The place has been around at least 50 years so they must be doing it right. Never had to have a reservation for lunch.

Also in the Rialto area ( but on the other side of the Grand Canal) when walking to Piazzale Roma is an out of the way place named Pane Vino e San Daniele on Calle Dei Boteri. Definitely a hole in the wall local place, good food, good house wine, and not expensive at all.
