Free admission in Florence - need a reservation?

We will be in Florence on the 1st Sunday of the Month. Admission to all state museums is free (including Accademia & Uffizi). Do we need a reservation to avoid long lines? How to get those?

My first comment is to avoid the free day. It is an absolute zoo because all the locals turn out. We did one free weekend and vowed never to do that again -- and we haven't.

Reservations are not possible on free days. This from the Uffizi's website:

On free admission days, it is not possible to make reservations and priority admissions are not valid (such as for card and pass holders), except for disabled visitors and people accompanying them by law, pregnant women and school groups included in the maximum number of school groups guaranteed per day (daily quota), as set by the Director.

The official ticket vendor for the Uffizi, Accademia and others of Florence's state museums normally open on Sundays show no timed-entry ticketing for 1st Sundays so it's stand in line. I wouldn't even think about trying to see the most-visited of them, like the Uffizi, on a free day.

Yes, avoid free days. We were in Florence 09/30-10/02. We went to the Accademia (David) on 09/30. We were in the street at the entrance 20 min early. It was quite crowded. I cannot imagine the madness of a free day.

I wouldn’t go near the Uffizi or Accademia on a free day but might consider any of the lesser visited very good museums like Bargello, San Marco to save a few euros

We were in Florence on the first Sunday in 2017. I really wanted to see the David and that was the only day we were there. We headed there first thing in the morning and walked right in. Uffizi had a line a mile long later in the day when we wandered past. So I do think it is doable, but you have to be there early.
