Frasassi Caves from Rome by Train - May 2025

Hi,

Trying to figure out a way to get to the Frasassi caves in Genga from Rome (or could go from Florence) in May 2025 - without renting a car. I know the train goes but it's a 3.5 hour trip each way, not sure if that's the high speed train. Has anyone found a day trip? don't want to stay overnight in the area as we've already booked our hotels. Could hire a car, but can I do it cost effectively?

Thanks

Not worth it. We went there during a week in le Marche with a car. It was fun but not 7 hours of travel to get there and back fun.

Thanks to all I'll have to investigate karst limestone caves in Tuscany as that sounds more realistic.

It is in the middle of nowhere. While there are actually direct trains from Rome, 4 hours each direction is a more likely estimate.

Good call, plus you need extra time for the tour logistics. You are moved from the parking area in a bus, then organized into groups for a guided tour. We were initially with dozens of tipsy Germans, but then were the only English speakers save one other family, so it was an excellent tour with one of the men who first explored the cave when it was discovered. So highly recommend for anyone in the Marche area!
