Four nights Milan/Lake Como

We have four nights that we can spend entirely in Milan and use that area as a base, or split the time and spend a night or two in Lake Como. We plan to take the train to Lake Como for at least a day trip but the idea of spending the night, waking up in the morning and strolling the streets is enticing.

We enjoy both. We will arrive in Milan after a week in Ireland. We are there to attend the InterMilan match on the 27th of October. After that we have two more nights, not sure if we should just stay in Milan and use it as a base. I’m leaning that direction.

I think it would come down to the arrival and departure times so you could put two nights on the lake together. Probably wouldn't do it for one..

Makes sense. Do you have any suggestions for a day trip itinerary? I usually put this stuff together myself but I’m getting the impression that the train to Lake Como is not direct, is that right? Does a tour make more sense for ease?

I've only been to Milan, but I get the impression it's an easy day trip to do independently. enjoy!
You could try the search here, but a general internet search would be more direct.

We are taking a regional train from Milano Central to Varenna-Esino. 11 euro , takes about an hour and change.

It's an easy direct train ride from Milano Centrale station to the Varenna station. I vote for staying at least one night in Varenna. If you enjoy visiting gardens, you will enjoy visiting Villa Cipressi and Villa Monastero. Have lunch or morning coffee at the Royal Victoria Hotel & you will get a wonderful view of the lake if you sit outside. However, I'm not sure if it will be warm enough or if the outdoor terrace will be open in late October. Regardless, I would definitely stay overnight in Varenna (2 nights minimum if possible!)
