We'll have about four nights before flying out of Venice and would like to explore some areas with good public transport (probably no car). We're thinking about Verona, Lake Garda, others but don't necessarily want to do one-night stands. Suggestions for late April?
Padua is lovely. The Scrovengi Chapel and St. Anthony’s are amazing, and it’s just an elegant town to spend some time in. Good transportation connections, and it has an hourly(?) bus straight to Marco Polo airport. Couldn’t be easier,
There are numerous towns on the main train line from Milan to Venice. If you are into byzantine mosaics, Ravenna churches are superb.
I have always wanted to do the Brenta Canal trip from Venice to Padua (or reverse). It stops at a couple of Palladio Villas (if his architecture is your thing) https://www.ilburchiello.it/en/tour/
As people have indicated it depends on your interests.
The old section of Verona is beautiful city with the 'elegant decay' feeling some Italian cities do so well that feels much smaller than the population of the city would imply. It has a few sights - Roman Arena and theater as well as some churches and museums. It offers many day trip possibilities - Bologna, Lake Garda, Padua, Vicenza, Brescia, Trento etc - by train and would make a good hub for that. Florence is even within reach although at 1.5 hours it is reaching my limit of a day trip, but the train is pretty relaxing way to may your way back after a long day.
Bologna is a big city but is close enough by fast train to be considered if the food capital of Italy was interesting to you. Day trips to Modena, Parma, Reggio Emilia and other culinary destinations are nearby.
Sounds like a great problem to have,

Thank you all so much for the great ideas!! Will definitely check out the canal between Venice and Padua. Thinking maybe Verona would be a good base. Thanks!!!
Maria, thx , I'm hoping we can do this on our spring trip. I didn't know about this tour, so another reason I luv this Forum!
Safe travels!
Maria, we just looked at the website for the canal cruise and are beyond excited!!!! Thanks so much for sharing this!
Treviso and Bassano del Grappa are some options among the less known places in Veneto region;
As mentioned above, other good suggestions are Padua, Vicenza and Verona
The canal trip-on my list too. Makes a 2024 spring return to Venezia a must! Thank you Maria.
Glad the tip helps. Enjoy.
