Now that I have found out that the fountains from the opening credits to "Three Coins in the Fountain" (one of my all time favorite movies), are at the Villa d'Este in Tivoli, I would like to know if this is worth a day trip from Rome? From what I have read, the fountains have not been kept up and some don't even work. The sights filmed in and around Rome for the movie are responsible for my love of Italy. I have been able to visit most of the places filmed, on previous trips, but until recently did not know where the fountains were. For this trip I have only 2 days in Rome. So, is it worth a day trip?
Thanks,
Debby
I loved Vila d'Este-it was a fun break in the midst of a heavy museum/archaeological itinerary. I wouldn't go to Tivoli just for it, but if you go in conjunction with a trip to Hadrian's Villa it is definitely worth a trip out. I would say if you have spent significant time in Rome before to do it.
I have not checked recently, but several years ago I traveled from Rome to Villa d'Este by train and walked from there to the Villa. Not bad at all. The travel and visit there will take most of the day. It can be a nice respite from Rome, and I love Rome! It all depends on how much you want to see the fountains. Some of them are quite lovely and the view breathtaking.
Have you been to Rome before?
