For soccer fans

Intense regional rivalry between Siena and Florence, dating from the Middle Ages, highlights the beginning of the season for Italian Serie A soccer. It's Siena-Fiorentina, in Siena Sat. Aug. 27, at 18.00. Next day - Sun. Aug. 28 - marks the full beginning of Italy's top league, with 9 other matches, with Naples-Genoa also at 18.00. An interruption due to an international game (Italy-Slovenia in Florence Sept. 6) will see Serie A games resuming on Sept. 11. (in Rome, it's Roma-Cagliari.)

Fiorentina-Siena is actually pretty tame as local darbies go. Certainly nowhere near the leavel of Lazio-Roma, Milan-Inter or even Juve-Torino. Best match of week 1 is undoubtedly Udinese-Juventus. Week 3 is a big one, Napoli-Milan (my team) BTW, did you see Aurelio De Laurentiis storm out of the Serie A draw? Cripes was that funny. He started screaming about how the entire league is against Napoli, how he's ashamed to be Italian and that he's "going back to cinema", then stormed out and hitched a ride with some kid on a scooter. Only in Italy...
