we are traveling to Rome and Venice in October - any recommendations for good womens footwear that will balance style and comfort?

You will find lots of options and discussions here on the Best Travel Shoes forum. They are applicable just about anywhere in Europe.

I spent 6 nights in Rome and 5 nights in Venice in June. I wore Saucony sneakers in shades of blue just about everywhere. But I didn't go anywhere fancy.

Comfort and support are the most important specs for my shoes anywhere. When I've tried to put fashion into the mix it's always been a mistake.

Plan for many hours on your feet, walking, going up and down stairs and standing and gawking. You may experience cool weather and rain, so keep that in mind. Cobblestones, marble and terrazzo can be very slippery. Mud may be common depending on where you go.

Too true, Lo!

No matter where we go, one pair of athletic-type shoes you can walk in for up to 10 miles and endure cobbles and marble floors and one pair of black leather Mary Janes (Ecco) that don't look so, well, athletic, when we go to dinner, I count on those MJs for up to 4 or 5 miles if need be.

I also discovered orthopedic inserts a few years ago and they make a huge difference in my comfort walking on those crazy streets. They also make my shoes last longer. The Walking Company is a great place to go to buy them.
