I will be in Italy the last half of June 2014 and splitting my time between Rome and Sorrento and I am using Sorrento as a home base to tour Amalfi coast and Capri. I would love to do the Footpath of the Gods hike. But I have read mixed reviews about how difficult it is and I know it depends on where you start. My two friends who have done it told me "It was fine, just go slow" but they are both triathletes and do outdoorsy stuff all of the time.
I am in decent shape. I work out a few times a week at most but I am willing to push myself for the views, especially if I can go at my own pace. And I have been hiking but by no means am I an experienced hiker so I am also concerned about the potential for getting lost/hurt.
To give an idea of my experience/fitness level, I will share my experience hiking Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh. I accidentally went up the steeper side (not from the side of the city center, I didn't realize there would be such a difference in difficulty). And physically I was able to do it but slowly. But I definitely felt like I could fall of the side of the cliff at certain points which was very nerve racking, especially since I was by myself. The views were beautiful and I am happy I did it. But I don't want to recreate that experience. And I would do it again but from the easier paths.
So any advice? Or suggestions on easier hikes in the area? I have Rick Steves Italy book but it is hard to get a good sense of the difficulty level. And I don't feel like Rick gave a good warning about Arthur's Seat! Or maybe I am just a wimp.
Appreciate all suggestions!
