Based upon several comments, it seems like a food tour might be a fun thing. We're not big on tours but this might be informative. I think, in the past, we've had a certain hesitancy and shyness about Italian restaurants because of the choices, customs and feeling a bit overwhelmed. I'm wondering about an effective way to schedule a tour. Early in the trip to give us knowledge and confidence? Or later, say in Rome, to introduce us to the neighborhood we're staying in (Trastevere) or as a splurge to cap the trip? My sister would have chips and a beer from the nearest convenience store for dinner if it was up to her. Thoughts?
Last time I was in Rome I did Eating Italy’s Testaccio Food tour. We visited a combination of delis, cafes and restaurants enjoying samples of all sorts of foods. A good pasta lunch with wine was included. We also visited the Testaccio Market and again enjoyed many samples of fruit and veg. Testaccio is an interesting area off the tourist track and the long history of the area was a part of the tour. They also do a tour of Trastevere which I would love to do. I can Thoroughly recommend this company. Food tours are also done in other cities - just Google food tours and the name of the city. I think Bologna might be a good choice if you are there as it is known as a food city.
I would do it at the beginning of your trip. We have done the Eating Europe Travestere Twilight Food tour and can’t say enough about it. We are doing it again in May with our 2 sons the first night we ate there (it’s our last leg). That way they can point out other places to go.
I like to do a food tour at the beginning.
It helps me acclimate to the food and people of a city, and I often return for a meal at some of the places visited.
I also did the Trastavere Twilight tour a few years ago, and it was by far the best food tour I've ever taken, none that I've taken before or since have come close! Highly recommend that you do it at the beginning of your stay in Rome as you will gain a familiarity with the neighborhood and the guide will be able to provide you with plenty of suggestions for additional places to try on your own.
