Food options on fast trains

Hi friendly travelers,

We are going to Rome for a first visit in the Spring. (We are experienced European travelers finally seeing some of Italy!) After our time in Rome we will be taking a midday fast train to Milan and on to Lugano (tickets purchased). What food choices does the train Bistro offer? Or do you suggest trying to purchase sandwiches to take along? Is there a good place at Termini to get take away food? I appreciate hearing from those familiar with Italian trains. Thanks!

Food acquired before boarding the train is likely to be both better and cheaper. In addition to the usual type of train-station offerings, Roma Termini also has the Mercato Centrale, which has multiple stands selling a variety of foods. The Mercato is open daily from 7:30 AM to 11:30 PM. That's where I'd go.

I haven't bought anything on a train in many years--too many baguettes with a paper-thin slice of prosciutto in the past--so I don't know what the bistro offers these days.

I agree!
I have gotten quite good food, and wine, at numerous train stations all over Italy and the rest of Europe. I love a train picnic.

Plan on purchasing food and wine prior to boarding. We didn’t and we’re drooling at some of the food our car mates brought on board.

Thanks, everyone, for confirming my thoughts. I’m glad to know there are options at the station. We can’t wait to experience Rome!

Yeah, your choices on the train are usually limited to pre-made sandwiches and salads, you might as well pick something up at the station where it is fresher and much more choice.

Sounds like the train station offerings will be the easiest and best. Thanks again to those who shared their personal experiences.

hey hey sallybic
i agree with buying food at train station "mercatocentrale.com" go to website, click artisans and see the different foods offered,
so much to choose from. we did this on few train trips (venice to florence, london to amsterdam. paris to geneva, annecy to paris). a few tips i'll offer: we had a foldable picnic bag, have a corkscrew for our bottle of wine, napkins/silverware/plastic cups/glasses, bag for garbage. we got baguette, salami/cheese, roast or fried chicken, asked them to cut up, sandwich/wrap, soda/water, pastry. you take your pick. it was great like happy hour for our adventure.
did not care what the train offered. we got fresh at station and was cheaper. everyone has own opinions. have a great time
