We will be arriving at the Venice Airport, renting a ar and driving 1.5 hours to Slovenia. I am wondering if there is a good place to stop for lunch on way. Thank you!
Someone might have a specific answer for you.
Just for fun, since I don't know the area at all, I did what I would do if I wanted a restaurant along the route. Plot the route on Google Maps, search for restaurants or fast food with a rating of 4.5 and above that aren't too far from the route, look at the photos and menu to find the kind of restaurant I like, make sure it was open at the right time. I did actually find a few. Most restaurants seemed way too fancy and time-consuming for a drive-by with luggage in the car, and I don't like fancy anyway. Fast food had some interesting options --- although hamburgers were prominent on the menus. there were local-looking side dishes. That's probably what I'd choose.
BUT, it seems to me that you'd be better off waiting to see what time it is (and how you feel) once you're in the car and ready to drive. That seems better than picking out a place now and then attempting to get there no matter how you feel. I hope you are not driving badly jet-lagged or exhausted or both. Will you have a phone with data? You could do the search before you arrive and flag some likely places along the way. Keeps your options open, but also helps prevent you from eating in some awful place out of desperation!
Where in Slovenia? I think your driving time estimate is likely verrrrrry optimistic. Have a look at ViaMichelin for a more accurate estimate.
For lunch, try stopping at one of the Autogrills on the autostrada. Everyone should experience an Autogrill at least once. And they're so convenient.
Thanks for your recommendations. We will be coming from staying Copenhagen flatter staying a couple of nights there. Hopefully the jet lag won’t be so bad.
And you are correct I think the drive time is a little over 2 hours.
First thing I thought of was the Autogrill.....they're good and fun!
1.5 hours will be enough to get to the border, no further.
There are no autogrill between VCE and Gorizia going east. There is one if you go to Trieste in case you go through the Kozina border crossing.
All others are Sarni or Chef Express, but all those chains are about the same.
Another vote here for Autogrill — they’re surprisingly good for a highway stop, with plenty of options beyond just fast food. If you’d prefer something more local, you can also check Google Maps once you’re on the road; there are usually a few family-run trattorias not too far off the route, but it really depends on timing and how tired you are after the flight.
