Food issue in Italy

We are going to be spending time in Italy with a relative who has dietary issues. She eats high fiber snack bars every day. Is something like this available in the major cities like Rome, Florence and Venice? Or, should she pack a large supply of them?

Thanks!

Another thing to consider is the wonderful vegetable options that are part of Italian menus. Artichokes are a popular regional dish in Rome, and they are relatively high in fiber. Worth a try.

You will find various healthy/protein/fiber bar options not only in grocery stores but in the farmacia. Perhaps she should bring enough for her first few days, but there are many options in the stores.

Thank you all for the responses!

Agnes - I love artichokes so I will check that out even if my cousin doesn't.

So very excited to be making our second trip to Italy!

Ahh, I love 'em too; (baked, stuffed artichokes, as they are called)
- steamed stovetop and then baked 'just enough.' The leaves are stuffed with a mix of homemade bread crumbs, real Romano cheese, parsley, garlic, olive oil, seasoning. My Grandmother made them every holiday plus another thousand things. Part of the delicious surprise was eating down to the 'heart of the artichoke.'

Carciofi is the Italian name for artichokes.

In Rome, my favorite way to have artichokes is gently steamed, in its own juice and maybe a little butter. But in the Jewish Ghetto, carciofi alla giudia is deep-fried and very interesting, although not the healthiest!

The carciofi alla giudia in Rome are something that you should not miss. It's like nothing I've found anywhere else. We specifically took a trip to Rome a few years ago to be there during the artichoke festival in nearby Ladispoli. Here's an article that offers a nice tutorial on the 3 main artichoke preparations and also some great places to eat artichokes in Rome- http://www.elizabethminchilli.com/2016/02/eat-artichokes-rome/

I'm not sure if the issue here is that your relative needs these high fibre snack bars and nothing else will do, or if she just needs fibre. If it's the former, than pack up the bags with her bars, because she might not like the Italian options (which she will find).

If it's the later, this is what I've done in the past: I buy Kellog's Bran Buds (or something just like it--the package shows what you're getting) and mix it with yogourt, also easily available in many flavours. I sometimes bring the bran from home in a ziplock bag -- it's light. Next trip I'll probably bring some Benefibre in powder or pills. I can dissolve the powder in any liquid or stir it into food.

Hope that helps. Fibre is important!
