Is it permissible to bring in sandwiches or our own food to the museum, say in a day pack? If so, are there places to sit down and eat? (Like a bench)
You can take food TO the museums but you can't take it inside. You have to leave it at the cloak room. There are cafes in the museums where you can grab a bite to eat. http://mv.vatican.va/3_EN/pages/z-Info/MV_Info_Consigli.html Donna
A new cafe has also just opened up on the Cortile della Pigna (Courtyard of the Pinecone) [INVALID] a nice place to rest, and shaded by umbrellas from the sun! Also, although official policy is that you shouldn't bring in food, if you have dietary requirements that restrict you from using the cafes, you could probably get a sandwich, snack bar or fruit into the museums fine. (The guards rarely never seem to care what they see coming through the metal detectors, and I've never seen food taken away from anyone!). The best place to eat would probably be on one of the (few, but existing) benches in the Cortile della Pigna. Hope that helps. www.revealedrome.com
