Food and Wine

We have been planning our trip for months and we have a good idea of what we want to see. We are going to Milan, then on to Venice, Florence, and Rome with a RS tour, and finishing up in the Amalfi Coast, based in Sorrento. My question is what should we eat and drink in the various parts of the country? They must be known for different cuisine (and wine) and we certainly don't want to miss it. Thank you for all suggestions!

Food -- after that I have no idea exactly what you are asking. As you waiter or tour guides for what is the local specialty. It may vary from town to town. It may also vary depending on what is in season. Eat what you like. Generally the house wine is a very good bet unlike the US where the house wine is generally cheap. Many restaurants actually take pride in their house wine.

Try to find a copy of Lonely Planet's World Food Italy. Small book, easy to carry with thorough discussions of the local food and wines. Also has a brief menu translator.

The above-mentioned Lonely Planet book is very handy. I happened to find one several years ago in my local Borders store but I think now it is out of print. These books are available for many countries and I ordered the France one from amazon and they probably have the Italy one too.

I should have clarified my above posting--I ordered a used copy of the France book from Amazon. They probabaly have used Italy books too.
