Food and shoes!

Hi!
My new husband and I are going to Italy and Croatia for our honeymoon! We are pretty set with our plans thanks for Rick and these forums but still looking for some restaurant recommendations; specifically in Rome by the Colosseum and any suggestions in Venice and Cinque Terre. We like eating outside and eating amongst locals.

Also, do any ladies have any suggestions for comfortable walking shoes. I'm looking for a shoe that I can wear with with casual day wear and also maybe with a dress? I suffer from plantar fasciitis so I really need the extra support.

Thanks!

Regarding restaurants in the Cinque Terre, it would help to know which of the five towns you'll be staying in?

Re food and venice.....thats where i made a big food mistake.... i assumed that "catch of the day" would be a fillet of a cheap white fish......it was mussels in the shell, whole calamari, and one lonely shrimp. Fortunately one of my traveling partners traded her plate w me. Moral of the story....ask follow up questions

If something worked well for you before, it should work well for this trip.

In Venice try La Bitta in the Dorsoduro. It's a no fish menu. Very small and cash only. Tel. 041-5230531. Highly recommended.

I am a big fan of Tieks, I have worn them on our last four trips to Europe. They don't look like they'll work for cobblestone or be good support but they are great, at least for me. Congrats!!!!

I have plantar fascitis which seems to be triggered by inadequate cushioning as I discovered after a day in lovely German hand made walking shoes that fit like a glove. I could hardly walk the next day and haven't worn them since. I use those blue gel things in the heels of most shoes or boots such as my snow boots and my waterproof hiking shoes. For day in and day out walking on pavement and traveling I wear Merrell Breeze mesh clogs. They are not fabulous looking but I have work them in rather upscale settings like dinner at La Tour d'Argent and the Paris Opera with black pants and they can be work with skirts. It is like walking on rubber; they are comfortable for me from the moment I put a new pair on -- no breaking in. I have put 100s of km on them in Paris and am on about my 5th pair.

Huge fan of Bzees. Heard about them on the aforementioned thread. They are made by Natualizer and are very padded and comfy. Wore them in Italy last year.

I akso have plantar fasciitis and have worn black Brooks shoes the last several trips. They have excellent stability and cushioning. They are not at all dressy, but not really noticible with black pants for a nicer meal out. And my feet have not given me any trouble!

What I've come to learn is the shoe that works for you is highly individualistic. And, like you, I have been on the hunt for a shoe I can walk for hours in, looking stylish enough to wear when we go out for dinner in the evening AND most importantly provides plenty of support. I have purchased many, many pairs of shoes that felt great in the store but once I brought them home and wore them around the house the challenges would emerge and I would take them back and start all over again. Through trial and error I have learned that for my feet I need a thicker, less flexible sole, support for my arches, generous room in the front of the shoe for my bunion and a little bit of a heel. The only pair of shoes that works for me is the Wolky Jewel. They come in almost 30 colours - I have 2 pairs but find I use the black patent ones almost exclusively. I am able to walk very comfortably for 25km+ a day both here in North America and in Europe over uneven pavement and cobblestones. The Wolky Jewel works for me but there is no guarantee these will be the shoes that hit that sweet spot of comfort and style for you. The only piece of advice I have is to purchase a pair and wear them inside for at least half a day of walking to make sure they really are comfortable.

I'm a very hard shoe person to please ... my current choices are a pair of Merrill's sandals similar to the Rose but mine our a couple years ago model and a pair of Pikolinos Puerto Vallarta II for evenings out or days with less walking.

I also suffer from PF and these are the two brands that have rescued me! Aetrix and Orthaheel, both advertise themselves as shoes for people with PF and they really do work. They are all I wear in Europe. You did not say the time of year your going but Aetrix has really cute sandals and boots! And they last! I have taken two trips to Europe with the same shoes and they look great and the support has held up.

Congratulations on your honeymoon!

We very much enjoyed our dinner at Osteria i Clementini, Via di S. Giovanni in Laterano, 106, very close to the Coliseum. Ristorante Naumachia was fun and is close as well.

As for PF, I wear Clark's and have liked Merrill's as well.

Enjoy your trip.

Congrats also!!!
I also have suffered with plantar's and have been concerned when I travel.
I have luckily found and shoe insert from Barefoot Science that I have been using
for 2 months. What a difference it has made. The reason I am suggesting the insert
is you can wear any of your own shoes with the insert, provided they fir properly.
Good luck!!!!
