Food allowed in the Colosseum?

For some reason I cannot find this information, and I've looked everywhere. Are we allowed to bring food into the Colosseum? Spending a day there, having food for a picnic lunch would be great.

jrnelson627. I can't imagine finding enough to do there to fill an entire day, even with tours. I'm also very sure that you can't picnic anywhere INSIDE the place.

Or maybe I'm confused about what you're wanting to do? 🤔
(Probably the case and it wouldn't be the first time!)

I am guessing we'll spend the day at the colosseum, forum and Palpatine hill. Our first tour is at 10:55, second tour at 12:45, done at 2:00. After that forum and Palatine Hill. We'll need to eat at some point. So just trying to think about when and where to work that in.

When you count the Colosseum, Palantine Hill, and the Forum, we easily spent most of a day there. And with only one tour. We had some snacks with us (like almonds) and ate them sitting on a bench on Palantine Hill. Then ate a very late lunch after leaving.

Hi jr,

I like to watch The Roman Guy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4EOVT4HfE-8 Sean is one of the lead guides. I don't know him, but, he's been in Rome for 10+ years. And, Sean and his team give some really good info and suggestions. Good even if you don't tour with them.

He states in his videos to bring bottled water or an empty bottle to fill at one of the fountains -- nasone. There are little restaurants near the Colosseo. Or, maybe for the heck of it, call The Roman Guy's 800 # and ask. They are experts, so could give you a better answer than I can.

In watching videos from The Roman Guy, it does not seem like people are eating "in the Colosseum area." Maybe bring a protein bar or two (non melting of course, lol) to hold you over?

Walks of Italy is another leading tour company in Rome. They too get a lot of good reviews.

Maybe after the 2nd tour at 2:00, we can step out for a late lunch then come back and see the Forum and Palatine Hill. I just can't imagine going all day without something to eat, and I don't want to cut the second half short because we're hungry.

We did our Colosseum tour and you can spend as long as you want, then you exit completely. Entering the Forum is another entrance line. By the time we left the Colosseum, the entrance line near the colosseum was very long and barely moving - even if you already had your ticket. I believe it was going back through security. We walked back to our hotel, buying lunch snacks on the way and took a break. Then we went back to the Victor Emmanuel Monument and entered the Forum at a different point with no line whatsoever. So you are going to be "out" anyway, and it will be easy to go get some lunch.

On a related note, when we entered security for the Colosseum, no one was allowed to take in any aerosol can whatsoever. We saw a lady in front of us throwing away what looked like a can of spray deodorant. Why anyone would haul this to the Colosseum, I do not know, but I warn you anyway. I didn't see anyone throwing away food.

Awsome! So it sounds like we'll grab something to eat in between. Does the Palatine Hill have a separate entrance as well?

The Palatine and Forum count as a single attraction as you move from one to the other within the security boundaries. You can enter from two different places; locate them on this map:

https://www.coopculture.it/en/maps.cfm?id=4

Roman Forum: Largo della Salara Vecchia 5/6 west of the Colosseum off Via dei Fori Imperiali. Zoom in and look for "Event Ticket Seller, Biglieterria Foro Romano"

Palatine Hill: Via di San Gregorio 30, south of the Colosseum, ""Event Ticket Seller, Biglieterria Palatino"

Just understand that if you leave the secure area, you can't re-enter on your ticket.

Could I leave the colosseum to eat, then go to the forum/palatine hill? I bought a combined ticket.

When we were there, there were several carts selling food around the Colosseum.

We were walking through the Forum one day and a group of young Italian school children with their chaperones just sat down anywhere they could and pulled out a slices of pizza and started eating. It was adorable.

Mona, that's what I was hoping to do! Pick up some food to-go and bring it to the forum or Palatine Hill for a picnic.
