FM1 tickets

A couple of questions... How early cam I take a train from Trastavere back to the fco airport? I am also taking it next Sunday to visit family in Orte. Are the tickets for exact times? I don't know how long I will stay that day. I thought I read on Ron in Rome that there is some time frame. Last question....how can I find the times it will go and return to Orte? I've tried but can't figure this out. Thanks!

The first train from Trastevere to FCO departs at 05:21 and arrives at 05:49. You will be traveling on Regionale trains for which no reservations are possible. Your tickets will be good on any train. You'll find complete timetables and fares on trenitalia.com. The site is available in English. Enter a date within the next seven days or you may not see all trains listed. Use Italian spellings: Roma Trastevere and Fiumicino Aeroporto.

The reference to time limit on tickets may be that a ticket is valid in direction of travel for five hours (I think) from the time validated. For longer trips there is a greater time limit. If you are thinking that you can use a ticket in both directions - you cannot.

To check schedules on www.trenitalia.com, use the Italian names of stops – Orte, Roma Trastevere and Fiumicino Aeroporto. Most trains between Trastevere and Orte are Regional or Regional Veloce trains, neither of which require a reservation. Buy 2 separate tickets at the Trastevere train station, one for your trip to Orte and one for your return trip. Regional train tickets are good for up to 60 days, so you can take any Regional or Regional Veloce train to and from Orte (giving you flexibility on your return time). That also means you could buy them a day or so before you travel. Note that regional tickets aren't valid on the more expensive Intercity trains, a few of which run between Orte and Roma Tiburtina. Be sure to validate the ticket to Orte before boarding in Trastevere, but wait to validate the return ticket until you arrive at the Orte station to board your train back. Regional train tickets are valid for 6 hours in one direction once validated, so the return ticket will have expired if you validate it at Trastevere. You can also buy the ticket from Trastevere to the airport in advance and then validate it the morning you travel. By the way, the direct trains from Trastevere to Orte start at 6:25am and depart hourly, with the last direct train back departing Orte at 7:32pm (also earlier hourly departures). There are later return trains with a change at Roma Tiburtina station.
