Hi all,
I've been planning a trip to Tuscany for a long time, and was hoping to go next year (which I've seen is a holy year, but that's a different issue). However, I've been looking at the airline information and it looks like things have changed a lot since I last flew internationally (17 years ago). I've been looking at the basic economy vs regular/main cabin seats for United and Delta/KLM, and it looks like you don't get to select your seats if you fly basic economy. My relative (who I'll be traveling with) has a medical condition that allows them to preboard on some domestic US flights, which includes choosing their seat (which is what they need the preboard for - they need to sit near the front of the plane). However, they've only flown Southwest recently, so not sure if that's a result of their preboard status or the open seating policy. If they were to fly basic economy but were allowed to preboard, could that include guaranteeing them a seat in the front half of the plane? I also know flying basic economy typically means we'd probably be split up - this is still the case even if one of us has preboard, right? Or can companions sit with the disabled person even in basic economy? If anyone has flown internationally with similar issues recently, I'd be very grateful for any advice. We've heard Delta is better as far as customer service, but would prefer nonstop, so United is also in the running. Any thoughts/experiences?
Also, I've had a hard time finding a reliable source on the typical price difference between the two - is the price difference between basic and regular economy even worth this stress? An extra $50 per ticket wouldn't break the bank, but an extra couple thousand would eat into our cushion in case anything goes wrong while we're away, which I really didn't want to do considering recent events with airline cancellations etc and the fact that I haven't traveled internationally in a long time.
Thanks!
