Flying to Sicily in April 2023

I’m having trouble booking a flight into Palermo and out of Catania for the required tour dates next April. I’m looking at flights to Rome or Milan and then booking on ITA. Wondering if anyone has booked from Rome or Milan on ITA? Would I be able to check my luggage all the way through as I’m traveling with an 81 year old friend. I would prefer to fly on Delta as I have enough points to purchase one of the tickets. I’m open to suggestions. PB

Delta and ITA are partners both members of the SkyTeam alliance therefore you can collect points. Go to Delta.com and try to book a multi-city flight.
When you open the page on the drop down menu where it shows round-trip click on it and select multi-city.
Then enter under flight 1 from your Home airport to Palermo, and select the date.
Then on flight 2 enter from Catania to your home airport. Select the return date.
I try and currently it is not showing any options. It is possible that Delta has not updated their 2023 calendar. Try to call them. You will likely fly via Rome FCO.

We flew United Airlines into and out of Catania, but going over we had a layover in Munich and returning the layover was in Frankfurt. Try going through airports other than Rome. You may have better luck with flights or connections.

You could consider booking to Rome and taking train to Catania. That’s what we’re doing in February. A long train ride but supposed to be very scenic. Check it out!

Another option is to book roundtrip to Rome, and then book on another carrier (e.g. EasyJet, Ryanair) for the flights FCO - PMO and CTA-FCO. However, you wouldn't be able to check luggage all the way through.

We just did a similar booking on Delta, with an ITA codeshare, for roundtrip nonstop flights from Boston to Rome. However creating a multi-city ticket on Delta/ITA was significantly more expensive than booking the Sicily trips separately. We travel with carryon luggage only, so checking bags was not an issue for us.

Thank you all. Lots of great options. I have looked at flying to Rome and then buying a separate ticket to Palermo. I’m a little concerned about my travel friend who is in great shape but is 81. I understand that we would have to get our luggage in Rome. Does anyone know how far it would be to the regional gates to get to? We would allow plenty of time. P

I am taking my mother to Sicily in May and she's 82. I was looking into doing the exact same thing as you because it's so much cheaper that way. However I realized that it's better off if I just suck it up and pay to book the multi-city flights instead of trying to figure it all out on my own. I'm looking at ITA flights out of JFK and into Palermo which stop in Rome and also Lufthansa has good flights into Palermo and out of Catania.

I'd go into Milan and then take a flight into Palermo or Catania with Ryan or Wizz... usually under $20 (plus luggage, which is more, lol) if you book ahead.
