Which airport do you prefer to fly out of in Milan? Are any of the airports near a train station?
Generally you don't have a choice of airports. The major airline use the international airport. And it is service by trains that take you into Milan.
Milan Malpensa and Rome are the two large international airports used by U.S. carriers. However, I beleive that Delta may still fly into Pisa from JFK. As for your question, Milan, Rome-FCO and Pisa airports all have train stations at the airport. It's just not the main train stations for that particular city. For Pisa, the main station is 5 minutes away. For Milan Malpensa, it's 45 minutes or so. For Rome, it's 35 minutes or so.
Milan has two international airports, Malpensa and Linate. While Malpensa seems to be more familiar, many intra-European flights on major carriers arrive at Linate. Both airports have good connections to downtown Milan, but I believe only Malpensa has train connections. Hopefully someone will know more about this. I would not avoid a flight into Linate if it were cheaper, better connection, etc. But you want to avoid transfers between airports i'd you are flying onward.
debbie, Could you provide a bit of further information on your travel plans? If you'll be boarding an international flight, you'll likely be using Malpensa, which is about 25 miles from Milan. Linate tends to be used mostly by intra-European flights and budget carriers. There are several transportation options to reach MXP airport from Milan: > Regular Trenitalia trains from Milano Centrale - trip is ~45M. > Malpensa Express, which departs from Milano Cadorna station (which is closer to the Duomo) - trip is ~30M. > Malpensa Shuttle (Bus) which departs from Milano Centrale - trip is ~45M. The Shuttle also goes to Linate. Happy travels!
I have flown in and out of Milano Malpensa many times arriving and departing from Italy. However, Ken brings a cogent point to the discussion when he asked for you to provide more info so we can be of more assistance. Buon viaggio,
Thanks everyone, Ken - we are doing a short flight to Dublin where we will connect the next day with our flight to JFK. I didn't want to risk arriving in Dublin and then boarding for JFK on the same day. There are flights leaving for Dublin from both airports. I just wanted to get a feel for them since you seasoned travelers tend to know if one place is easier to reach or negotiate. Thanks again for sharing your wonderful expertise. It helps to know these things in advance.
We now fly out of Linate because it is much closer to the center of Milan. We simply take a taxi, cost about 20 euro and takes 15-30 minutes.
