I've been reading that all Rome to U.S. flights out of Fiumicino now start with check in at terminal T5, not at terminal A,B, or C, the former check-in sites. My question is can one get to T5 if coming by the Leonardo Express train from Termini, or perhaps more to the point, HOW does one get to T5 coming in this way?
Ciao Jerry,
Actually a great question. Terminal 5 is located about 850 yards from the Main Terminals C, B, A, and AA. It IS NOT connected to the main building and sits rather "isolated" to east of the main terminals.
Once you arrive by train, you can walk it, but it's a haul and at some point (heading down the highway ramp) there are no, or limited, sidewalks. So the trick is to exit as if you're heading towards C Terminal and catch the shuttle bus down below the walkway on the road which runs in front of the Main Terminal! Sounds harder than it is...
The shuttles start running to T5 once the T5 terminal opens (usually around 7:15-7:30 AM). Just make sure you are headed out on a US flight. I was out there one day waiting for a friend at B Arrivals. He got delayed so I decided to walk to T5 just to stretch my legs. I got there about 7:00 and it was NOT OPEN, but parked out front was a US college student heading back to the States - through Paris. Eventhough she was catching a US flight in Paris, and her ticket was codeshared.... she had to catch Air France (from Terminal B) to leave Rome!
Because it was so early, the shuttles were not running yet. So we hauled her 5 pieces of luggage UP THE HILL, UP THE RAMP, all the way till we got to C Terminal and could get a cart! She barely made her check-in.
So it's not a walk I'd make with luggage (been there - done that). Ride the shuttle from in front of C Terminal - where the train comes in - and you'll be fine!
Ciao,
Ron
Am I correct to assume that if you arrive by taxi they can drop you directly at T5?
Yes, tell the driver to take you to T5!
