I feel like I may have seen this so forgive me or guide me... We are going to Florence in July from Boston. Is it cheaper and/or worth it, to fly into Rome and then travel to Florence? We plan to go to Rome anyway so thought we might spend a few days at the beginning/end of our trip in Rome and spend the middle of our trip in Florence/surrounding ares. Would any other cities make sense? Thoughts????
Believe it or not, it's about $100 cheaper if you go bos to Pisa(psa) and out of Rome rather than round trip to Rome--this is on AA. There is a cheaper flight round trip to Rome on TAP, however, many of my colleagues have spent a miserable time trying to find luggage when they arrived, and some never did!
What's TAP :)?
The Pisa airport is so easy to navigate and the train station is right in the same building so you can fly into Pisa and take the train to Florence.

How far/long of a train ride from Pisa to Florence? We were also thinking the Rome thing might work because we are planning on spending 3-4 days there anyway. Pisa would be a day trip, probably combined with another area like Lucca. Would it eat too much of our trip to land in/out of Pisa? We are in Florence for 2 weeks but planning on going to Rome (as I mentioned) for 3-4 days and also Venice. Thanks!
Michelle,
I'd suggest you use a website like sidestep.com or kayak.com to check for you flight options. Check flights to both Rome and Florence. Check the box that says include nearby airports. If you do this, you will also get see flights to nearby airports like Pisa.
This will give you an idea of your choices.
If you fly into Rome, it is easy to take the train to Florence.
One more qualifier... we are using FF miles so already it will take us longer. We also have 2 children (10 and 14) so time as well as money are a consideration.
