Hey y’all,. We can fly into Pisa early enough to travel to a coastal town. I’m looking for recommendations for a town not to crowded in July. We would prefer not to have a car, so easy access as well. Thanks in advance. Sue
Lucca is exceptional.
Lucca is a quaint ancient city, however it should be noted that it is not on the coast, therefore don’t expect to see bodies of water around (except for the Serchio river).
There are many coastal towns near Pisa, the easiest to reach by train (in case you don’t rent a car) are, on the north side, Viareggio, and south of the port city of Livorno (Leghorn), the smaller towns of Quercianella and Castiglioncello.
Viareggio, Quercianella, and Castiglioncello have a train station walking distance from the beach (especially the last two). Viareggio is a bigger town, very popular with beach vacationers. The other two are smaller, but in my opinion quainter.
Thanks very much. I think I’ll go with Viareggio, I found a few nice hotels. Would we be ok with no car?
We can take the train from Pisa but once we get there should we rent a car? I’m a nervous passenger and my husband likes to drive!! 😉Thanks again. Sue
You can survive easily without a car. You can also use Viareggio as a base for Day trips to other coastal towns nearby (by bus), Pisa (train), Lucca (train), Cinque Terre (train), and even Florence, Pistoia, Montecatini (train or bus).
Roberto, you just made my day a whole lot better. I had my heart set on Cinque Terre but I couldn’t figure a way to get there not arriving at midnight. I’ll do a day trip. Thanks again.
