Flying into Pisa and traveling on to Rome

We are flying into Pisa with no night planned there. We have room reservations in Rome the evening we arrive in Italy. Is it possible to see Pisa and at least the leaning tower and then train to Rome? Our arrival time is 1140 in Pisa. What do we do with our luggage if we visit Pisa for the day until we train to Rome?

It's absolutely possible. I flew out of Pisa, so came in for a couple hours from Cinque Terre. There might be more to the city, but the Tower & rest of the Field of Miracles seemed like the only thing worth seeing.

I don't know for sure, but the train station probably has a luggage check.

Have a great trip.

You're OK. First, there are 3 airports in Italy that have train shuttles from the airport to the main train station. Pisa is one of them with the 5-minute Galileo Express. It takes you right to the main train station. Pisa has excellent staffed storage for your luggage. My wife and I have used this facility. Facing the tracks and with your back to the train station, turn left and go down to the last two buildings on your left. Go between them and to the right rear. You'll see it. They make a copy of your passport picture (or at least they used to) and keep the copy with your luggage. You need to show your passport picture to retrieve your luggage. 3 Euros per bag.

For the leaning tower, its a 30-minute walk and a 30-minute walk out. You can shorten this a bit by taking the bus from across the street from the train station. Figure 2-3 hours for the whole thing unless you want to climb the tower which will take longer.

Once you have picked up your luggage and are ready for your train ride to Rome, CLICK HERE for the typical afternoon train schedule. Try for the ICPlus train. It's faster and not too expensive.

You will be fine and above info is correct. Pisa is not an all day visit. It is more like a two hour visit that includes 30 to 45 walking to and from the train station.

No, the train station is in town.

I'm curious, what are the other two cities that have shuttles from the airport to the train station?

Two things. The station at the airport is not the main Pisa train station. The two are five minutes apart. Second, for my neighbor Andrea, the other two airports are Rome-Fiumicino (the Leonardo Express) and Palermo (the Trinarcia Express). You could argue that Milan has one as well with the Malpensa Express but it does not go to the main Milan train station. It goes to the Cadorna station. Picky picky.

Thanks Larry. I am actually leaning towards flying into Milan, so that is good to know.
