flying into one city and out from another

My husband and I are traveling to Italy on our honeymoon sometime in June of this year. We are planning on going to: Rome, Sorrento (with day trips to Naples/Amalfi coast), Florence, and Venice all within 14 days. We are flying out of Houston. The way I have worked our itinerary, I was planning on flying into Rome to begin our trip, with it ending in Venice.

Flights have been outrageous for flying into Italy, esp for flying into Rome and out of Venice. Would it be best to fly in AND out of Rome, and pay to take the train back to Rome when we are done with Venice OR pay the extra money to fly out of Venice when we are through?

Or right now it is $400 cheaper per airline ticket to fly into London. Then we could hop on Ryanair or Easy Jet to get into Italy, and then when we are done with Venice, fly back to London on Ryanair (I have flown Ryanair and Easyjet many times in the past so I know all about their fees, etc). If we did that, we would stay in London for a weekend and skim one day off of florence/sorrento.

So many choices...I am looking for what you think is the cheapest option, but I am also worried about going to the airport so many times. What do you think?

Jill - We have been flying into London Heathrow for the past several years as our jumping off point for the rest of Europe. We usually use British Airways because they often have connections out of LHR so no changing airports and the prices have been very competitive once you add up the airport transfer time and cost as well as the other companies extra fees. On our outbound trip, we allow at least 4 hours connection time. On the way back, we always do a short layover in London and sometimes the flights back to LGW are even more convenient.

Just did some research for a friend - LHR to Rome and then back to London from Pisa. BA was cheaper than the other airlines with the transfer costs figured in.

We have also flown one way on BA and used easyJet for the return since we don't have to worry about a frenzied airport transfer on the return trip.

Enjoy your trip!

Jill,

I've done what you suggest before ... bought a R/T to London and then a separate ticket to Italy. One year I had a similar situation. The R/T fare to London was $500 cheaper than the R/T fare to Italy. I've also put at least a day buffer on each end.

I've often found that BA can be nearly as cheap as Ryanair or Easyjet on certain flights to Italy once you factor in the extras (particularly if you have a bag to check). I've flown between London and Italy 3 of the last 4 years (Verona, Milan, and Rome) and used BA each time.

Are your flying days on a Friday or Saturday? If so, have you looked into changing the days of the week you are flying? I know this sounds too simple but flying on an off day can save you a lot of money. For example, I was checking airfare to Italy last week and noticed that if I flew out on a wednesday instead of Friday or Saturday I saved about $200 per ticket. Have you also looked into arriving in Milan?

This may seem obvious to many, but I have noticed that not everyone knows to use the MULTI-CITY key when looking for two different cities to fly in/out of instead of two one-way tickets. If you are using FF miles, you have to call and use an airline agent (for a fee) to fly into one city and out of another. Try Iberia (Spanish airline)and fly from Madrid to Itlay-much less hassle than London airports.
