We are a family of 4, 16 yr old girl (loves the beach and walking around, hates museums) and 17 yr old boy (loves everything). We are flying into Naples and out of Venice and will be in Italy for 14 nights. I have an itinerary but needs to some advice about possible changes, I have hotels for all options.
Fly into Naples, train to Sorrento
4 nights Sorrento (would like to make 1 of these nights an overnite in Capri). We will go to Ischia while my boys go to Pompei one day
Pick up rental car in Sorrento and drive to Sperlonga for 2 nights. I chose this to get away from the Amalfi coast as I hear it's super crowded.
Drive to Rome and drop off car, 3 nights in Rome
Get rental car and drive thru tuscany, stopping along the way and 1 overnight in Sienna
Drop car off in Florence and spend 2 nights here
Train to Venice for 2 nights.
Questions are:
1. Should I make my overnite in Capri my last night (are waters rough in the Summer that they can cancel the ferry) Then take the ferry to Naples for my car rental to go onto Sperlonga.
2. Should I skip Sperlonga and add a day to Tuscany so we can stay at at villa and do a cooking class (this is top on my kids list) and add the other day to Florence.
3. When we do Sorrento is a private boat trip an option for Amalfi, Pasitano & Ravello.
I'm very open to options and suggestions. Thank you in advance.
3.
You have obviously done your homework with research and planning, and so much appeals to you!
But- You have 7 destinations for 14 nites. I think your itinerary needs a major trimming.
Note that traveling in Sorrento and the AC is frustrating and time- consuming because of the sadly-neglected infrastructure.
I'd suggest picking your top four destinations and limiting the trip to those. You should plan for days to slow down, recover from a cold, do laundry , etc. Are your teens good at getting up and out early in the mornings?
In either case , have a wonderful family adventure!
Have you done a trip like this before? To me, moving every two nights is a misery; others love it. So, I try to take personal preference into account, but moving two teens adds something into the mix that I would dare say is not "ease."
My happy places is visiting spots like Sperlonga, but for two nights I don't think it is worth the bother, and it will be plenty busy in summer as well. Your other locations could definitely use more time.
