Flying into Bari and out of Naples

My wife and I are flying into Bari on April 21st and departing Naples on May 10th. We would like some advise as to what to see and where to stay in Puglia. We thought of staying in the area for 14 days before heading to Amalfi/Naples area to spend our last 5 days. (We have been to the Amalfi coast before). We have a car and would like to stay in a self catering home/apartment for 4 or 5 days at a time. Would appreciate any suggestions on building our itinerary and what areas we should not miss. Thank you.

What fun! There's a lot to see in Puglia, and usually people are only there for a few days.

I've heard that Bari itself if very nice but haven't been there myself. I like Lecce a lot. It's a beautiful baroque town, quite different from the tiny picturesque coastal villages where you'll probably spend a lot of your sightseeing time. The city tourist office does walking tours.

Since you have a car, you may well prefer to stay in smaller places. It may be helpful for you to look at the list of towns on the itineraries of the van trips organized by the Lecce tourist office. The information is in Italian, but the town names are identifiable. You can compare that information with the impression you form from reading a guide book to the area. Alberobello is pretty much essential for the trulli.

I'd definitely include Matera (in Basilicata) on the way back to Naples. It is special.

With over two weeks you can do a fairly extensive tour of Puglia. In addition to Lecce, I would include something in the Itria Valley area and also, in Basilicata, Matera.
