Flying in to Naples, Salerno, then on to Puglia by bus or rental car

Our days in each location are flexible. Is 2 nights enough in Naples to get a feel? I have read a lot on this Italy Forum, and am apprehensive about finding lodging in a good area in Naples. One poster mentioned the Chiaia area. I'm having a hard time figuring out exactly where that is in the city. Another area was also mentioned, but now I can't find it. Its a little more difficult on the Airbnb site to tell exactly where the places are in the city on their map. From Naples after lots of reading we will go to Salerno, but how, bus, train, taxi? Would 3 or 4 days be best for Salerno? From there we will head to Puglia & Bascilicata, either by bus or rental car. I'm thinking 4-5 days for this area. I am appreciative of any input.

Personally, I'd spend longer in Naples than Salerno. Having been to both several times, there is far more to do in and around Naples I'm not sure I can see the attraction of the Salerno, unless you have family roots there. From Naples, it is an easy trip by train to Salerno (< 1 hour) , but you are also in easy reach of Herculaneum, Pompeii, Sorrento and Caserta (with its beautiful palace and gardens)
Salerno is closer for visiting Paestum, but even this is not that difficult from Naples either.

To get to Puglia - I'd be inclined to rent a car. A bus or Train from Salerno to Bari will take more than four hours - ViaMichelin gives the driving time as slightly less than three - but you obviously then have the advantage of choosing your route and stopping places in Basilicata.

Susan, I think the other area is Vomoro. Here's a map that should help you.

I agree with Tim, you'll have much easier access to Ercolano Scavi,Pompeii Scavi, Capri and the Archeological Museum from Naples. There's an immense amount of things to see in Naples.

Think I would split your time 3/Naples, 3/Salerno.

For Puglia, a rental car will optimize your time.
While busses and trains will get you there, schedules will allow you to visit half of what you could see with a car. The roads in the area are good, scenic in spots but not as well traveled as other areas in Italy.
