Flying in to Milan

Hello I am flying in to Milan and will be taking a train to Genoa for a cruise....help!! I’ve seen different choices going to Genoa and I don’t know which train to pick.

Do trains sell out? I’ve gotten responses that I shouldn’t get tickets until I get there?

Also, once I get off the plane In Milan, I have to catch one train to the center of Milan then another train to Genoa?

Thanks

What day what time?
There are several direct trains; pick the one that goes direct requiring no changes.
You want Milano Centrale to Genova Piazza Principe.
But you should wait to buy the train ticket after you arrive. Who knows if the flight will be delayed or canceled.

Would suggest you not buy a ticket until you have landed, gone through immigration, got your luggage and made your way to the airport train station. There buy a ticket to Milano Centrale, then a connecting train to Genoa. You want the station Genova Piazza Principe, walking distance to the Cruise Port. Trains are at least once per hour.

Depending on the time that you arrive, you might want to check the bus option directly from Malpensa. Last year when I was at Malpensa, there was an information desk (I just confirmed with her that I was waiting for my Stresa bus at the correct door.) who can help you. If you have a lot of luggage for your cruise, it might be a lot easier to not need to take the train into Milano Centrale & switch to the Genova train.

Here's one bus company:

"Do trains sell out?"
BUT- it may be so crowded that you may stand for the journey.

Have you considered contacting your travel agent and asking about direct transportation from MXP to the dock at Genoa? It would seem less worrisome if you considered this option. It would probably be more costly, but no muss-no fuss.

I've taken trains from Milan to Cinque Terre that travel via Genoa and they've never been so crowded that I had to stand for any part of the trip. Although it can theoreticaly happen when traveling on regional trains, I supect the likelihood is very low. Even then it probably wouldn't be for the entire trip. I bought my tickets upon arrival in Milan with no problems, and I suggest you do the same.

Edit: I notice that there are some Intercity trains that run from Milan to Genoa. Those trains include a seat reservation, meaning zero chance you'd need to stand for any part of the trip. The cost for the Intercity train is only about 8 euro more than the regional train.
