We need to get to Florence from Stuttgart Germany in early October. It looks like the schedule to Bologna is much more frequent and a quick train ride to Florence. Wondering if this is a good idea.

If price and convenience work best for you, sure.
The Aerobus from the airport to Bologna Centrale goes every 11 minutes, takes about 30 minutes, costs 6 EUR. Buy tickets from vending machines. Fast trains are very frequent. Trenitalia for 29 to 33 EUR, or Italo for 25 to 30 EUR. Takes 40 minutes to Florence SMN.
There is also direct bus service. Tickets at the airport Welcome Center, 20 EUR, but it looks like they charge an extra 5 EUR for hold luggage. Departures every 2 hours and takes 90 minutes to the side of SMN station.

From Stuttgart to north of Florence is not served well by airlines. But Lauda Airlines goes into Bologna.

I think Germanwings flies to FLR now
