New Salerno airport and flights to Sicily

Apparently from September there will be flights available from the redeveloped Salerno Airport to Sicily! See link below.

The Amalfi Coast Will Get an Airport This Summer, But Full Takeoff is Still a Few Years Away

We will be staying in Positano in late September and were planning on flying out of Naples but now wondering if flying out of Salerno would be a better option. Do you think it might be a bit risky / unreliable given it's a new service? Also it seems for now there are only flights available between Salerno and Catania, so there's also that. We had preferred to start our 10 days in Palermo to spend a few days there and visit Monreale before traveling down to Agrigento and across to east coast.

I love the ferry overnight Naples to Palermo. There are also ferries from Salerno - maybe to Messina or Catania.

It’s definitely closer to Salerno than Naples. But also consider that the Catania airport is five minutes from town by bus while the Palermo airport is about an hour from Palermo. It’s no where near Palermo.

Thanks for the response. We want to maximise our time, hence prefer to fly rather than take an overnight ferry. So thought we could fly between Catania and Salerno instead of Naples.

But… it seems Volotea has only announced such flights on Mondays and Fridays which might not work for us. Has anyone flown with this airline?
