We will be driving from Paris to Assisi and then return to Paris by air from Rome. Does anyone have a suggestion as to which of the local airlines are good and allow a small suitcase in addition to a small carry on?

Dorothy, we often fly Vueling from Rome to Paris. Their planes are new, their service is friendly, and the planes are "usually" on time. You might also read this for more info on other budget airlines, some links that may help you to to determine which budget airline to use, and the restrictions of flying on a budget airline in Europe.
