flying from Rome to Geneva, Switzerland

Greetings! I am looking for information about flights from the Rome airport to Geneva. We are ending one tour in Rome at the airport, and will be making arrangements to fly on our own to Geneva, Switzerland. I am anxious to know any tips or information about which airlines to check, and how soon I need to buy tickets. I will not know the exact date we will be ending the tour in Italy until February 28, 2018, to travel the end of June, 2018, from Rome to Geneva. Thoughts on this? Many thanks, Debi

You should have a few options for a direct flight.
A quick Kayak search on a random date shows me 3 low cost options for a 1 way flight:
Easy Jet, Vueling and Alitalia.
Not sure if others also fly this route.

Not even Nostradamus can tell you the best time to purchase advance airfare.
As a general rule for international and domestic US flights I think 3 months is a good time ; however for the Europe cheap small connection flights and for some budget carriers based in Europe for International flights as well it seems the best time is usually as early as possible as they are unlikely to ever go down from where the price starts at.

How to find all the routes to or from a give airport. Look up the Wikipedia article on the airport, there is always a section "Airlines and destinations, listing all the routes.
Rome has multiple airports, so I looked up Geneva ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geneva_Airport#Airlines_and_destinations ). Answer:

  • Adria Airways Switzerland Rome–Fiumicino
  • Alitalia Rome–Fiumicino
  • Easyjet Rome–Fiumicino
  • Vueling Rome–Fiumicino

Where exactly are you going to in Switzerland? If your end destination is not Geneva, consider Basel or Zürich airports. With the Swiss train system, you can get from any of them to anywhere in Switzerland. Depending on where in Switzerland, one or the other airport may be more convenient.

We have found easyJet follows a similar business model as Southwest. We like and use them when convenient. They don't get as crazy as Ryan Air but follow their restrictions to the letter especially regarding check-in and luggage.

Google Flights shows Vueling around $42-$48 nonstop while SwissAir around $80 non-stop. Heard good things about Vueling but don't know all their items they charge you for like seats or bags to know how much that $40 airfare will increase to compare to the $80 by swiss air.

Flown on Vueling before.
Would definitely use them again.

They have a fare called Optima that includes a reserved seat and checked bag.
It does cost extra but I recall it being more reasonable than most.

I cannot see the fare difference in the receipts I have. Best way to book is on their website so a quick visit there should show you the basic vs. optima ticket difference for your route.
