Flying from Florence to Lyon - need help

So we are looking at flying from florence to lyon next june - the flight goes from lyon to rome with 1 and 1/2 hour layover and then a connection to lyon -

the website - skyscanner - says you have to get your bags (are planning on having a carryon and a backpack) - and go through security and passport control for each leg - both of these countries are schengen countries right? we are americans if that matters. is an hour and a half enough time to do that? can anyone give some insight?

thank you

What airlines is Skyscanner showing you? Sounds like it is 2 separate tickets on different airlines.
Volotea flies direct Thursday and Sunday if you can arrange your schedule that way.

Skyscanner might be suggesting separate tickets rather than a "connecting" itinerary.

You might want to look at flights out of Pisa, which is the area's bigger airport.

Yes, 2 separate and unconnected airlines. I would steer clear of that as you are completely unprotected in case of delay on your Air Italia flight.

The best solution is to look for an airport that has direct flights to Lyon, and take a train there. Florence airport itself is not so well connected. Pisa has been suggested.

Unfortunately it looks like getting the Lyon - Turin railway back operational will take a long time, so train is out for the moment.

I'd look at Lufthansa through Munich in 5 1/2 hours. Extra time is due to 3+ hour layover in Munich. Super safe that way.

Volotea flies direct from Florence to Lyon on Tuesday and Friday in June through October (at least that is the current 2023 timetable).

Neither Pisa nor Bologna have direct flights to Lyon in June, at least not currently.
If the Volotea option does not work with you, then there is EasyJet that flies direct from Rome Fiumicino. They have two daily pairs, currently leaving at 9:45 or in the afternoon at 17;10. The option you mentioned in the original post is probably the first flight leaving at 9:45. If you fly from Florence to Rome to catch that flight, then you are talking about flying to Rome with ITA Airways, with their very first flight out of Florence. ITA is the only airline operating a flight from Florence to Rome (3 daily pairs). ITA Airways will probably not transfer your bags through EasyJet, therefore you will be on a flight with separate tickets which require checking in again in Rome. Easyjet is the only direct option to Lyon from Rome.
However you also can reach Rome also by train (approximately 2h20m to 2h40m to the airport), but the earliest you can get to FCO by train is 8:37am and that is cutting it short for the 9:45 flight (obviously you have plenty of trains to comfortably make the 17:10 flight).
I agree that with a layover involved Lufthansa is probably the better option, or alternatively also AirFrance via Paris. There are several flights a day from Florence to Paris (with AirFrance) or Frankfurt or Munich (with Lufthansa).

We just flew Florence to Lyon and back on Volotea the last week of September. And we flew Saturday to Saturday. They were both evening/night flights. As Roberto said, they also fly this route on Tuesdays. Direct flights, both arrived on time, the return flight arrived 20 minutes early. Flying time is about 55 minutes. Everything is a la carte. Seats, baggage, carryon, etc.

For June 2024, Volotea is showing Thursday and Sunday flights.

if you get a flight that is only 2 times a week and something happens to the one you want are you out of luck for half a week?

Yes, currently in 2023 Volotea flies FLR-LYS on Tuesday and Saturday.
Next season, in 2024, they are changing it to Thursday and Sunday.
I think this would be the best option if the itinerary can be worked around these dates. Otherwise I'd go with Lufthansa or Airfrance via their respective hubs. I would consider Rome with EasyJet only for the afternoon flight. I wouldn't go with the early morning flight from, too risky. The ITA flight would get you there on time (sched. arrival at 7:20), but it requires you to check in separately with EasyJet and with bad weather there is a risk since FLR cancels flights if winds are over 10 knots, and with two separate tickets ITA would not cover you in case you miss the EasyJet connection. The Frecciarossa train is more reliable but the first one can get you there only 1 hour prior to flight departure from FCO.

Reading this with interest as I am planning to travel by train from Florence to Lyon in March, 2024. I have found a ticket through raileurope.com that goes from Firenze (Santa Maria Novella) through Milan then through Geneva ending at Lyon Part Dieu for $169/each, change of train at each stop. This approx a 10 hour trip all on one day, so not an overnight train. I'm actually looking forward to seeing the Alps from the train. I have rooms booked within walking distance of the train stations in both Florence and Lyon, and I am picking up a rental car in Lyon. Is this a bad idea? Should I be looking for a flight instead?

In March the Volotea flight FLR-LYS does not operate. So the only options are Lufthansa or AirFrance (via their respective hubs) or Rome with Easyjet, so the air options, when everything is said and done, will be still 6 to 7 hours, door to door.

After readying about the initiatives within the European Union to encourage shorter journeys by train rather than flying, does one leg of the trip by rail make sense? Either Florence to Rome on the Frecciarossa, then fly to Lyon, or else fly to Paris, then take the TGV from CDG to Lyon.
